"The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays is coming to its close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences."
'Entering a period of consequences' is a perfect phrase for the position that many people find themselves in after years of not putting their body higher on the list of priorities.
It can be a shock to find that your body is no longer supporting your lifestyle in the way that it used to and I suppose that it is just our nature to not see the progressive changes. This disconnect easily leads to a yearning to understand what has changed and why your body is now responding like this when it has never done this before.
As you know, your body's goal is to perform any movement in the easiest way and this often leverages more on your joints. The joints of your body are designed for some stress and are lined with a surface that is made for rubbing and articulation. Over time, this rubbing can lead to wearing away of this surface. When it chips, frays and becomes no longer smooth we call it arthritis. So, now the joint stress that you previously couldn't feel - the articular surface doesn't have nerve - is providing you feedback in the form of pain. And now you have entered a period of consequences.
Continuing with the same type of movement patterns will cause greater damage and pain. At this point you have to change how your body moves and try to decrease the activity that would otherwise lead to replacement of the joint.
The good news is that prior to this point there is much that you can do to ease the stress to your joints, even if you don't have time to add regular exercise into your day. There is so much benefit that can be gained by taking care of your body and making simple changes in how you sit, stand, move. Position your body into an alignment that will use the muscles (i.e. ensure that your feet are aligned with your knee when walking up stairs) during your daily activities and you will reduce stress to your joints without increasing the amount of time you spend on yourself.
Some of these positions require conscious thought and education to know what is right for your body, but the payoff is that you don't enable your body to lead you to a period of consequences.
And then, speaking of consequences, Carla went to Panera....
