Nelson Carson, Licensed Massage Therapist, RYT 200 Instructor
Nelson has been licensed in massage therapy by the State Medical Board (SMBO) since Sept. ‘16. As a therapist, he has worked on a wide range of clients—from high-performing athletes to people with postural imbalances in need of rest and recovery from the day-to-day. Whatever the need, Nelson is always willing to share insights on the dynamic workings of the physical body and the breath, and how these can relate in terms of our own self-care.
Nelson practices yoga and has taught it for several years. He enjoys playing sports and, while he does relish the community aspect of triathlons and running events, he is happy just to finish vertically. Among his favorite activities, hiking and traveling with his wife are up at the top of the list. Sipping on some coffee or South American mate (mah-tay) with friends and family are high on the list, too. As a massage therapist, Nelson’s strengths are in Trigger Point therapy, Sports Massage and myofascial work. He is also skilled in Swedish and relaxation massage. |
A little more about Nelson in his words:
Why do you feel massage is important to the body and why did it become your profession?
I first experienced the benefits of massage therapy as a teenager at a swim meet. It was in the old OSU natatorium, and the massage was free of charge. How could I pass it up? After the short poolside session, I felt like a million bucks—loose, free from tension and ready for my big event. Over the years, I continued to seek massage therapy for all of its benefits, particularly relaxation and reduced muscle tension. As a massage therapy practitioner and receiver, I believe it is an excellent complement to everybody’s wellness journey.
Years ago, I was at a career crossroads and I was ready for some change. I had taught English abroad and continued to do so back home in Ohio. I wanted to continue working with people, yet in a different capacity. I was ready to shift from teaching the English language to facilitating health and wellness. It was when a dear friend and experienced massage therapist encouraged me to look into the practice of massage that I was ready to dive in. In three years of being a massage therapist, I've really enjoyed learning the science and developing the art of massage.
How did you come to be apart of EQUIVITA? What values do you have, that you feel align you with your experience of EQUIVITA thus far?
How did I learn about EQUIVITA? Two words: Carla Fox. She was my teacher in the Samyoga Yoga Teacher Training in 2015-16. Recently, I finally chose to heed her advice and come join the EQUIVITA massage team. Most importantly, Adam was on board!
I'm excited to join EQUIVITA because of its unique approach to promoting wellness. By looking at wellness from a big picture perspective, EQUIVITA seems to merge the best of both Western and Eastern approaches--with heart and hutzpah. I'm learning more about the 5 keys to fitness, and I plan to integrate these into my own pursuit of wellness. Wishing you a safe and balanced wellness journey!
