Benefits of Flexibility
It is important to do static stretching of the major muscle groups to achieve
the optimal effects of your healthy lifestyle. As we age, muscles tighten and
the range of motion in a joint can be minimized. This can lead to a decrease
in our activity level and even stop some day-to-day activities. A regular
program of stretching can help lengthen the muscles and restore activity.
Performing warm-up exercises is not the same thing as doing a stretching
workout for flexibility development.

Flexibility is necessary for the following reasons:
• Adequate flexibility may help prevent muscle strain and problems as
backaches.
• Adequate flexibility is necessary for achieving and maintaining good
posture.
• Flexibility is associated with effective daily functioning, including driving
ability, among older adults.
• Good flexibility can improve athletic performance.

There is a correct way to perform stretching exercises. For flexibility to be
increased or to increase the length of the muscle:
• It must be done frequently to improve or maintain flexibility
• The muscle must be stretched and held beyond normal length for an
adequate amount of time.
• Stretching exercises must be repeated an adequate number of times.
• Stretching is specific to each muscle or muscle group.

Overstretching may make a person more susceptible to injury or hamper
performance. However, performing stretching exercises is beneficial to
improving flexibility.
