The War on Fat! FitU for this Saturday!! February 11th from 10-11am

It wasn’t always like this, but for the better part of the last century body fat has been treated as a scourge on society and something of which a healthy individual would want to rid themselves. But is it true? Has our focus on body fat being evil blinded us to what is really important for our health? Has too much emphasis been placed on the battle against fat that it has hindered our ability to understand, and thus, control and direct it? At this Fit U we will discuss fat and those things that make the simple Calories In Vs. Calories Out equation complex.

This Saturday!!  February 11th from 10am-11am

in the EquiVita Cafe(the new one!)

1508 Hess St., Grandview Heights, OH 43212

What you need to know about FitU

These are meetings that begin with Adam speaking about a particular topic of Health/Wellness, they then open up for Q&A discussion.  The meetings are always free and open to the public. So really, what have you got to lose?!  Bring yourself, bring your questions and be there this Saturday at 10am.

Restorative Yoga Workshop: February 18th from 1pm to 4pm, lead by Kimm Marks.

It comes as a delightful surprise to many beginning yoga students that taking time to rest is an integral part of every yoga class. At the end of class, after the exertions of the yoga practice, time is taken for rest as students settle down into corpse pose or savasana (pronounced sha-va-sa-na.) Lying supine on the floor with a few props for support we are able to surrender our bodies to the support of the earth beneath us. This short but powerful time spent in relaxation offers us the opportunity to depart from the endless activity of ‘doing’ to the serenity of simply ‘being.’ For many practitioners of yoga, it is this practice of savasana that is the most pleasurable, if not the most profound, part of their practice.

The practice of restorative or ‘restful’ yoga takes its inspiration from the practice of savasana. In a restorative practice, most if not all, of the postures are done restfully, in a manner that gently opens the body. Using a variety of yoga props (bolsters, blankets, yoga blocks) students are assisted in setting up their props to create a unique foundation for rest in a particular pose. During this workshop, we will explore a variety of postures(we can modify all poses to suit the needs of each student respectively).  A restorative practice can be enjoyed just one posture at a time or practiced in short series of poses over the course of an extended period of time for a profoundly deep experience of rest and relaxation. Participants will discover favorite poses and learn how to use them in a home practice. Restorative yoga can be enjoyed by everyone at all levels of experience with yoga including beginners.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your questions. We hope that you will take some time to rest with us November 19th.

EquiVita’s Kick-Ass Cardio & Fitness

Tis the season to Kickstart your fitness!

Kick Ass Cardio is the original program designed by EquiVIta’s own Transitional Fitness Trainer Christopher Yeoman a military veteran with over 28 years of martial arts experience, incorporating moves from Muy Thai , Tae Kwondo, and the ever popular realm of mixed martial arts

Kick Ass Cardio gives you a pulse pounding, fat burning , stress relieving workout that is totally tailored to your level.
Kick Ass Cardio is instinctive and easy to master,
and then you adjusts the same techniques on an individual level to increase the
intensity and just how hard you bring it.

Traditional Cardio-Kickboxing classes provide no kinetic feedback to the body allowing for sloppy technique and no real sense of the bodies full potential of motion. In Kick Ass Cardio that feed back is imperative to the full experience and helps develop muscle strength , better balance, develops bone density, as well as increasing stamina.

Testimonials from our KAC clients

“I came to Equivita looking for a kickboxing class to try. I found a place that cared more about my health and wellbeing more than filling a class. I was surprised by the diversity of the classes offered and the kindness of the staff. They cared about my goals and helping me safely obtain them. The variety and varying difficulty of classes made it easy to obtain my goals. The massage therapists helped keep my body in tip top shape while I was taking all my favorite classes.” ~ Ashley Davis : Satisfied client at EquiVita

“I started in February and attend at least 2
nights per week. I continue to go for a couple of reasons. 1) The
workouts are never the same, and Chris is always increasing the intensity
level. 2) It has improved my stamina and my strength. I am an avid runner
and I run approx 20-25 miles per week. While my cardio levels are good, I
needed to increase my strength training and improve muscle tone. This
class is helping me do exactly that!
When I started this class, it was amazing to me how tired I was 15 minutes into the class.
I’ve taken other cardio kickboxing classes in town, and the intensity level
Chris brings is a bit higher which I really like. I also like that Chris
makes sure that proper techniques are used in the class, and he goes out of
his way to teach those techniques so that students maximize their
performance and minimize injuries.” ~ Matt Usher Satisfied client at EquiVIta

This class is about personal power. Accept the challenge and prepare to amaze
yourself.

Instructor:

Christopher Yeoman, Boxing Instructor
Christopher started training in the martial arts at the age of eight. He attained his black belt of Tae Kwon Do in the style of Ji Do Kwan when he was twelve and then achieved his 3rd Dan belt when he was around twenty. Christopher entered the United States Navy shortly after high school and spent over 8 years traveling and living abroad in countries such as Japan, Korea, and Thailand.
In those travels he had the opportunity to study numerous martial arts in the specific countries of origin. While abroad he immersed himself in arts such as Eskrima from the Phillipines and Bojutsu from Okinawa. He was privileged to experience the cultural differences and history from numerous teachers, providing him with a unique experience and perspective in his own teachings of physical, mental conditioning, and self defense. Christopher has taught at the college level classes in human behavior, situational response, and the bodies response to stress during times of crisis. Christopher looks forward to bringing his experiences to Kick Ass Cardio and sharing them with you.

Kickboxing Body Blast

What 20 Minutes can do for you!

You can do bicep curls in the mirror till your arms ache, but it will never be like the burn you feel after throwing punches that connect with over three hundred pounds per square inch of force.
You can have the heaviest leg press in the gym and it still wont deliver the same feeling as landing a kick with the impact  that equals a thirty five mile per hour car crash.

In our Kickboxing body blast sessions and Kick Ass Cardio Sessions at EQUIVITA you will get to experience that rush over and over again.

Our newest way to start your day…’Get Moving!’ Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 7:00 am

Here’s our newest class inspired by a request from one of our clients:

Get Moving!

taught by Drew

Then come check out Get Moving: an early morning exercise class designed to get the blood flowing, loosen muscles and to improve concentration so you can take on those challenges of the day. Get Moving is designed with an intensity in mind that will make you sweat and burn calories, but without making you feel like passing out right afterwards! The benefits range from improving joint pain/movement, sore muscles, flexibility, improving cardiovascular endurance and so much more. So come on over to EquiVita and start your day off right with Get Moving!

A little bit about Drew:
Drew is dedicated to listening and helping each client achieve his or her personal fitness goals. After struggling with his own health and having to undergo emergency surgery a few years ago, Drew became dedicated to getting his body into shape as well as his overall well being. While succeeding in achieving his own goals, he watched as others struggled and complained about “not getting anywhere” and he naturally became more and more interested in helping others reach their potential. Fate then handed him the opportunity to work towards an occupation where he can help others when he was laid-off from his Graphic Design position, allowing him the time to return to school and work towards the rewarding career change. Drew’s goals are to continue to learn and study in order to better assist each and every client the best way possible. He is still dedicated to maintaining his own health as well, running and exercising almost every day and training for marathons. Since changing his lifestyle, Drew has never had a recurring problem from the disease that plagued him years earlier.

EquiVita Massage Experience: The EquiVita Difference

At EQUIVITA, you can expect a well-trained Licensed Massage Therapist who has your care as the center of their concern.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your therapist in our Cafe. While enjoying a fresh cup of coffee, you will be asked to complete a brief health history form that will determine your current physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, areas of pain, health goals and current need for massage. Our therapists will help you to identify the goals of your massage, whether you are seeking a one-time relaxation experience or if you are integrating massage into your total wellness plan.

A massage from an expert EQUIVITA Licensed Massage Therapist differs from the traditional massage because our therapists are trained to provide the balance between relaxation and therapeutic intervention for each individual. 10 Weeks to 10 Years: Week 10

10 Weeks to 10 Years: Week 10

Over these past 10 weeks I have been giving a lot of thought to EquiVita. Now I realize that is something that I do everyday, (and yes, Janine, working on the business not just in it), but this thinking has really more been about the ‘why?’. (I mention Janine Moon because she helped tremendously in the coaching of me and the business.) If you have kept up with these weekly articles you know it hasn’t been easy and that I walked away from much easier, or at least more secure, positions with established organizations. And of course I could say that it is just my nature to be entrepreneurial, but that doesn’t really address why I would choose to go into a field where there weren’t already established models of success. I suppose, as in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers: The Story of Success, the reason is actually a culmination of many factors.

At college I started weight lifting. Well, I had started lifting years earlier but just did whatever was typically done in the school’s weight room and didn’t really connect with it until my freshman year at the University of Cincinnati. On campus there was a weight room for the serious lifters. Officially a Club, it was referred to as the “dungeon” and even some of the university football players lifted there instead of in the upstairs much nicer facilities. In this dungeon I learned that there is a very different focus and community among those that are regulars. It is an acceptance that regardless of how strong you are or even whatever goals you have, you get “it”. The “it” is basically that you are not there for show. You are there to work. And that work’s focus is you.

There is a camaraderie created amongst individuals suffering the same and how unique to have that same suffering the effort of bettering oneself.

An injury can provide an individual with the same focus of working on self or it can distract away from it. Working in healthcare I saw too much focus on the ailment and not the person. It seemed to me that there was this golden opportunity that through this (potentially very negative) event, people could be inspired to make a change.

Think of it. You have an injury that is going to force you to make the time to take care of it. Whether you apply ice, exercise, massage the injury, etc., you have to adjust your schedule to allow your body to heal. You have a reason to put yourself first! Under normal, uninjured circumstances others could call you selfish (and use it as a negative), but not when you have a, preferably visible, physical ailment.

But our healthcare system is designed to focus just on the affected area now and later to see about the rest of you…Seriously? I cannot imagine a better time to focus on the whole person. The body is demanding attention. Once the pain is lessened the opportunity is lost. People always think that once they get through whatever they are in the middle of that there will be time to focus on the non-urgent.  But we all know how rare it is to find someone who actually does that. There is never enough time, money, energy or whatever is the current limitation.

Create a community where the focus is on each individual taking care of his/her self. That is a novel idea…and certainly not my original concept, but it is what I (with the help of so many others) have done. Over these past 10 weeks we have highlighted our exceptional staff and some of our amazing clients-all of whom are at various stages of fitness, but all with the commonality of taking the time to put the most important thing first: self.

It doesn’t really matter what your goals are because they will change over time. It doesn’t matter how fit you are because that too changes over time. The only thing that truly matters is taking care of you, and the ways to best do that also change over time.

EquiVita is a very hard place to describe because there aren’t facilities like it to compare to. The best way I like is to say that EquiVita is just a location until you experience it. Once you get that everyone here wants you to achieve whatever you want, you naturally want the same for others.

Thank you for allowing me to share some of EquiVita with you over the past 10 weeks and for your support of our unique personal service business over the past 10 years.

As always, please let me know how I can help.
